Tinubu Appoints ‘No-Nonsense Officer’ as New Army Chief — Okai Calls for National Cooperation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Major-General Waidi Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff, marking a decisive reshuffle in Nigeria’s military leadership.
The announcement comes amid renewed efforts by the administration to strengthen national security and combat emerging threats across the country. The appointment follows the President’s recent replacement of all service chiefs, a move described by observers as part of a broader strategy to reposition the armed forces for greater efficiency and discipline.
Major-General Shaibu, widely described by colleagues as a “no-nonsense officer,” has served in several critical command and operational roles. His leadership style is reportedly firm yet strategic, earning him a reputation for professionalism and operational effectiveness.
Reacting to the appointment, public affairs commentator Usman Okai Austin commended the President’s choice and urged Nigerians to rally behind the new military leadership.
“The appointment of a disciplined and courageous officer like Major-General Shaibu is a welcome development. It’s time for national unity and cooperation to support our armed forces in the fight against insecurity,” Okai said.
Analysts believe Shaibu’s tenure will focus on restoring public confidence in the military and driving ongoing reforms within the Nigerian Army.
The Presidency has yet to release full details of other related postings, but insiders suggest the move reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to overhauling the security architecture and prioritizing results-driven leadership.
