Why Power Supply Dropped Nationwide – TCN

By Erewunmi Peace

Electricity supply across Nigeria dropped nationwide following disruptions in gas supply to power generation companies, authorities have confirmed.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) explained that the reduction in power supply was triggered by gas constraints affecting several gas-fired power plants. These constraints were caused by vandalism of gas pipelines, which limited the volume of gas available for electricity generation.

According to NISO, the gas shortage forced many power plants to operate below capacity, leading to a significant drop in total electricity generated on the national grid. As a result, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) implemented load shedding to maintain grid stability, causing reduced power supply across different parts of the country.

Electricity distribution companies also confirmed the development, noting that low system frequency made it necessary to reduce power allocation to customers to prevent a total grid collapse.

The power supply disruption has affected homes, businesses, and public institutions nationwide, sparking renewed concerns over Nigeria’s heavy reliance on gas-fired power plants and the recurring issue of infrastructure vandalism.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to restore gas supply and stabilize electricity generation, while security agencies have been urged to intensify the protection of critical energy infrastructure.
