APC Criticises Peter Obi’s Move to ADC, Describes It as “Convenience Politics”

By Erewunmi Peace

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised the reported move of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the decision as an act of convenience politics.

In a statement credited to party officials, the APC said Obi’s decision to align with the ADC reflects a pattern of political realignment driven by personal ambition rather than ideology. The ruling party argued that frequent party switches undermine democratic consistency and long-term political development.

According to the APC, Nigerians are increasingly wary of what it described as “coalitions formed for electoral survival,” adding that such alliances often collapse after elections and fail to deliver meaningful governance.

The criticism follows reports that Obi has joined the ADC as part of a broader opposition strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections. The move is believed to be aimed at consolidating opposition forces against the APC.

Reacting to the development, supporters of Obi have defended his decision, saying it is a strategic move to strengthen opposition politics and provide Nigerians with a viable alternative in future elections. They insist that coalition-building is a legitimate democratic practice.

As of the time of filing this report, Peter Obi has not issued an official statement personally responding to the APC’s remarks, though leaders of the ADC have welcomed his reported entry into the party.

Political analysts say the development signals the early stages of intense political realignments ahead of 2027, with major parties positioning themselves for the next general election.
