Tinubu Approves U.S.–Nigeria Security Cooperation to Combat Terrorism

By Erewunmi Peace

President Bola Tinubu has approved a formal U.S.–Nigeria security cooperation aimed at strengthening the fight against terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry across the country.

The agreement, described by officials as a framework for collaboration, will enhance intelligence sharing and operational coordination between Nigerian and U.S. security agencies. While media outlets have referred to it as a “pact,” the government clarifies that this is a working arrangement rather than a full treaty, with details of the partnership yet to be made public.

According to the Presidency, the collaboration is expected to bolster Nigeria’s counter-terrorism capacity while respecting national sovereignty. The U.S. has previously provided support through training, intelligence, and equipment, and this arrangement formalizes the ongoing partnership under President Tinubu’s administration.

Analysts suggest the agreement is a strategic step in addressing the persistent insecurity challenges that have plagued northern and central Nigeria, where terrorist groups and criminal gangs have carried out repeated attacks and kidnappings.

Officials from both countries are expected to meet regularly under the U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group to coordinate efforts and monitor progress.
