Retired Navy Commodore Kunle Olawunmi Alleges High-Level Interference in Terror Suspect Interrogations

By Erewunmi Peace

Retired Navy Commodore Kunle Olawunmi, a former senior intelligence officer who once served as Deputy Director, Defence Administration, has raised concerns about high-level interference in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism — alleging that certain senior officers have ordered the release of terror suspects during investigations.

Olawunmi, who has repeatedly spoken publicly about the influence of Boko Haram sponsors within Nigeria’s political space, says his experience in military intelligence revealed several irregularities in handling terror-related cases.

Security analysts note that his claims align with earlier comments he made accusing influential individuals within government of aiding extremists and undermining national security efforts. These remarks previously drew significant attention and led to his invitation by defence authorities for questioning.

However, while Olawunmi insists he has evidence to support his allegations, no official documentation or independent verification has so far been released to the public. This makes the claim a matter of ongoing public interest, but still unconfirmed.

At the time of this report, military and federal authorities have not provided a detailed public response addressing the specific allegation of ordered releases of terror detainees. Calls for transparency and accountability continue to grow among citizens and security observers.

Nigeria has spent more than a decade battling Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other violent extremist groups — with thousands killed and millions displaced since the conflict began. Concerns about internal sabotage and compromised security structures have surfaced repeatedly throughout the war.

While Olawunmi’s background and previous responsibilities give weight to his concerns, the absence of publicly verified evidence means the allegation remains under scrutiny. Nigerians — and the global security community — will be paying close attention to any official investigations or disclosures that may follow.
