Austrian Pro-NATO Committee Chairman Condemns Kwara Church Attack, Calls for Stronger International Action

By Erewunmi Peace

Austrian politician and Chairman of the Austrian Committee for NATO Enlargement, Gunther Fehlinger-Jahn, has condemned the recent attack on a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Kwara State, describing the incident as “utterly unacceptable.”

Fehlinger-Jahn’s remarks followed a viral video showing armed assailants storming the church during a service, leading to the death of worshippers and the abduction of several others. The attack has triggered widespread outrage within and outside Nigeria.

Reacting on his official X (Twitter) account, the Austrian activist called for stronger global attention to the rising insecurity in Nigeria. He drew parallels to past international interventions, urging world powers to take a firmer stance on religious-linked violence in the country.
Though his comments referenced “military action,” Fehlinger-Jahn is not a NATO general or an official representative of the alliance. His position is largely advocacy-based, with no formal authority to speak for NATO or any government.

Meanwhile, Nigerian security operatives have taken over the Eruku community in response to the attack. Soldiers and police officers have been deployed to forestall further violence, while search operations for the abducted victims are ongoing.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has also visited the scene, assuring residents that the government will strengthen security across vulnerable communities.

The Federal Government has yet to issue a formal statement on Fehlinger-Jahn’s comments, but military authorities said efforts are underway to track down the perpetrators.

The attack is one of several violent incidents recently recorded in parts of Nigeria, sparking renewed calls for comprehensive security reforms and better protection of rural communities.
