Gunmen Kill Dozens, Abduct Residents in Niger State Attacks

By Erewunmi Peace

30 people have been killed and several others abducted following coordinated attacks by armed gunmen on rural communities in Niger State, according to police and local officials.

The attacks occurred over the weekend in Kasuwan-Daji market and nearby villages in Borgu and Agwara Local Government Areas, where gunmen reportedly opened fire on civilians, set houses and market stalls ablaze, and fled with abducted residents.

Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident, describing the attackers as suspected armed bandits operating from forest hideouts in the region. Security operatives have since been deployed to the affected areas, while efforts are ongoing to rescue those kidnapped.

Residents told authorities that the attackers arrived on motorcycles and struck without warning, forcing many villagers to flee for safety. Some local sources estimate the death toll could be higher, as search operations continue.

Government Condemnation and Security Response
President Bola Ahmed
Tinubu has condemned the attacks and directed security agencies to intensify operations against armed groups responsible for violence in Niger State and other parts of the country.

The attacks are part of a wider security challenge in northern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnappings, and insurgent activities have persisted despite ongoing military operations.

In a separate incident, at least nine Nigerian soldiers were recently killed in an ambush in Borno State, highlighting the continued threat posed by armed groups.

Niger State has experienced repeated attacks in recent years due to its vast forested areas, which authorities say are exploited by criminal gangs for hideouts and movement routes.

Lawmakers and civil society groups continue to call for stronger security coordination and improved protection for rural communities.
