By Erewunmi Peace

Veteran journalist and co-founder of Newswatch Magazine, Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, has passed away at the age of 75, marking the second loss of a founding member of the publication within two months.

Yakubu Mohammed’s death was confirmed by multiple sources in Lagos, where he reportedly passed away after a brief illness.

His passing comes less than two months after the death of Dan Agbese, another co-founder of Newswatch Magazine, who died on November 17, 2025.

Mohammed was a prominent figure in Nigerian journalism and played a key role in establishing Newswatch Magazine in 1984, alongside Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Dan Agbese. He served in senior editorial roles and was instrumental in shaping the magazine’s reputation for investigative reporting and independent journalism.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues, journalists, and media organizations, who described him as a dedicated journalist and mentor whose contributions significantly impacted Nigerian media.

The deaths of Yakubu Mohammed and Dan Agbese highlight the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s pioneering investigative news magazines, which has remained influential in the country’s media landscape for decades.
