Tinubu Government Moves to Shut Down Social Media Accounts Used by Bandits and Kidnappers

The Federal Government of Nigeria has intensified efforts to curb online activities of terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers by targeting their social media accounts. The move comes amid growing concerns that criminal groups exploit platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and X to boast about loot, recruit members, and coordinate attacks.
Government Action
Speaking at a recent security briefing, Major General Adamu Laka, Director-General of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), confirmed that the government is collaborating with social media companies to identify and disable accounts linked to criminal activities.
“These platforms were previously used by terrorists and bandits to show off their illegal gains and intimidate communities,” Laka said. “We are now working closely with these companies to take down such accounts and prevent their misuse.”
Scope and Limitations
While headlines have suggested a total “wipeout” of criminal social media accounts, the initiative focuses specifically on accounts tied to terrorism and crime. The NCTC stressed that criminals often create fake or anonymous profiles, making enforcement an ongoing process rather than a one-time action.
Impact on National Security
Analysts note that removing these accounts will disrupt the online propaganda and coordination channels of criminal groups, reducing their visibility and influence on social media. It is part of a broader government strategy to enhance national security and protect citizens from banditry and kidnappings.
The government has urged social media users to report suspicious accounts and cooperate with authorities in tracking criminal online activities.
