Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Suspends Two-Week Warning Strike

By Erewunmi Peace

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its nationwide two-week warning strike, which began on October 13, 2025.

At a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, ASUU President Chris Piwuna said the decision came after an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) and recent engagements with the Federal Government.

“While we have not achieved all our objectives, we are certainly not where we were before the strike began… NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike to allow for a conducive atmosphere for further engagement,” Piwuna stated.

ASUU’s strike was triggered by the Federal Government’s delay in concluding the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement and other unresolved demands including welfare, revitalisation of public universities, and payment of promotion and salary arrears.

The union has given the Federal Government a one-month window to meet its outstanding demands. Should there be no meaningful progress within that period, ASUU warned it will resume strike action without further notice.

The suspension follows the intervention of the Nigerian Senate and other stakeholders in the negotiation process.

The action and its suspension bear significance for Nigeria’s tertiary education sector: students, parents, and academic staff alike have long been affected by the frequent industrial actions that disrupt academic calendars and undermine planning. The one-month window could offer a critical pause for both parties to reach a lasting settlement.
