Tiger Base Policemen Arrest 12 at Imo Market; Witnesses Claim Extortion

By Erewunmi Peace

Twelve people were reportedly arrested by officers from the Tiger Base unit of the Imo State Police Command at Orlu International Market in Imo State. According to witnesses, the officers were dressed in all-black clothing and masks, which led some to describe them as appearing “like terrorists.”

Eyewitnesses said the arrested individuals were taken into custody on suspicion of involvement in criminal activities. Some local reports also claim that the officers demanded ₦800,000 each from those detained.

While these details have been widely reported online, the Nigeria Police Force has not yet issued an official statement confirming the allegations of money extortion or the specific circumstances of the arrests. The description of the officers’ attire as “terrorist-like” is based on witness accounts and has not been verified by authorities.

The Tiger Base unit, known for its counter-crime operations in Imo State, has faced scrutiny in the past over allegations of human rights violations, but officials maintain that the unit operates under strict protocols to combat crime and protect civilians.
Residents have expressed concern over the incident, calling for clarity and transparency from the police to ensure public trust.

Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation into the arrests continues.
