Presidency Dismisses Claims of Immediate NELFUND Loan Repayment

By Erewunmi Peace

The Presidency has dismissed reports claiming that beneficiaries of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) have been directed to begin immediate repayment of their loans.

The clarification follows widespread circulation of messages on social media suggesting that students who accessed the federal government’s education loan scheme would be required to start repaying without delay.

Reacting to the reports, a presidential media aide described the claims as false and misleading, urging the public to disregard them. According to the Presidency, there has been no directive mandating immediate repayment of loans under the NELFUND programme.

Officials explained that the education loan scheme was designed with clear repayment guidelines, which include a moratorium period. Under the existing framework, beneficiaries are expected to begin repayment only after completing their studies and meeting stipulated conditions, such as employment, in line with the Act establishing the fund.

The Presidency further noted that misinformation surrounding the loan scheme could create unnecessary panic among students and parents, stressing the need for Nigerians to rely on verified sources for accurate information.

NELFUND was established to provide interest-free loans to Nigerian students in tertiary institutions, with the aim of improving access to education and reducing financial barriers.

Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to transparent communication regarding the programme and advised the public to follow official government channels for updates on policies affecting students.
