ADC Alleges APC Is Forcing Civil Servants to Register as Party Members

By: Erewunmi Peace

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that civil servants in parts of Nigeria are being pressured to register as members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as part of the party’s ongoing electronic membership registration exercise.

In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC claimed it had received reports suggesting that some government workers were being coerced into participating in the APC’s e-registration process. According to the party, the alleged pressure is linked to concerns over job security and career progression.

The ADC described the situation as a violation of constitutional rights, particularly the freedom of association, and warned that compelling public servants to join a political party undermines the neutrality expected of the civil service.

“The civil service is meant to remain politically neutral. Any attempt to force party membership on workers is undemocratic,” the statement read.

The opposition party further called on relevant authorities, including labour unions and regulatory agencies, to investigate the matter and ensure that civil servants are not subjected to political intimidation.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation from the APC or federal authorities regarding the allegations. In previous instances where similar claims surfaced in some states, APC officials have maintained that membership registration is voluntary.

Political observers note that as parties intensify preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, membership drives and related accusations may continue to generate public debate.
