Tinubu’s Electricity Reform: What It Means for States
By Erewunmi Peace
Discussions are ongoing around recent amendments to Nigeria’s electricity laws, aimed at giving states more participation in power generation and distribution.
The reforms trace back to the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2024, which decentralised aspects of the power sector and allowed state governments, private companies, and individuals to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity under proper licences.
Current reports, including coverage by Pointblank News, suggest that new amendments could further empower states in managing electricity resources. However, major national news outlets have not yet confirmed the signing of a new bill in 2026.
Authorities are continuing consultations to ensure the reforms strengthen electricity access and accountability across the country.
Experts say that greater state involvement could improve electricity reliability, but caution that effective regulation and oversight will be key to preventing mismanagement.
