Investigation Reveals US, Dubai Properties Linked to Maina’s Pension Fraud

By Erewunmi Peace

A recent investigation has exposed foreign properties in the United States and Dubai allegedly connected to Abdulrasheed Maina, the former head of Nigeria’s Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, who was previously convicted of pension fraud and money laundering.

According to findings by investigative journalists in collaboration with global reporting networks, Maina purchased multiple homes in Kentucky, USA, and a Dubai apartment between 2010 and 2013 — during the same period pension funds were reportedly misappropriated.

Records show that Maina paid cash for several properties, raising questions about the source of the funds.

Some of the properties are now reportedly owned by his ex-wife and children, and were not seized by Nigerian authorities during initial investigations.

The purchases highlight a broader concern about how stolen public funds may be transferred abroad, complicating efforts to recover misappropriated resources.

Maina was convicted in 2021 for money laundering linked to pension funds, a case that drew national attention due to the scale of the fraud and his role in government. The recent investigation does not legally prove the properties were purchased with stolen funds, but the timing and cash transactions suggest possible money laundering activities.

Nigerian authorities, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), have the mandate to trace and seize assets linked to corruption, including overseas properties.

This investigation adds pressure for international cooperation in recovering suspected ill-gotten wealth.

The revelations underscore ongoing challenges in tracking and repatriating stolen public funds, as well as the importance of transparency in asset ownership by public officials.

Observers say this case highlights the need for stronger anti-corruption mechanisms and collaboration with foreign governments to prevent illicit capital flight.
