DisCos Attribute Repeated National Grid Collapses to Low Power Generation

By Erewunmi Peace

Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in Nigeria have attributed the recent and repeated collapses of the national power grid to low electricity generation, a situation that has continued to cause widespread power outages across the country.

The DisCos made this known while reacting to the multiple grid collapses recorded in recent weeks, which plunged several states into darkness and disrupted economic and social activities nationwide.

According to the DisCos, inadequate power supply from generation companies has made the national grid unstable, increasing the likelihood of system failures.

They explained that when generation drops below sustainable levels, the grid becomes vulnerable to sudden disturbances that can lead to total or partial collapse.

Industry stakeholders have also pointed out that challenges within the transmission network, including technical faults and voltage instability, may have contributed to the recurring incidents.

The National Independent System Operator (NISO) has previously cited transmission disturbances as part of the factors affecting grid stability.

The repeated collapses have drawn concerns from businesses, manufacturers, and electricity consumers, many of whom say the situation is affecting productivity and increasing operating costs due to reliance on alternative power sources.

Experts have called for urgent reforms in the power sector, stressing the need to improve generation capacity, strengthen transmission infrastructure, and enhance system management to prevent further grid failures.

As investigations continue, Nigerians have been urged to remain patient while relevant authorities work towards achieving a more stable and reliable power supply across the country.
