Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has stated that the individuals allegedly involved in a foiled coup plot were fully aware of the consequences of their actions.

Speaking during a media interview, the Defence Minister said the officers accused of plotting to overthrow the government must have considered the implications of their decisions before embarking on such an act.

“They must have made up their minds when they decided to do this and must have considered their families,” the minister said, stressing that the rule of law would be followed in addressing the matter.

According to reports, several military officers were arrested in connection with the alleged coup plot, which was uncovered by security authorities in late 2025. The Defence Headquarters had earlier confirmed that investigations were ongoing.

General Musa assured Nigerians that those accused would face a court-martial and would be given a fair hearing in line with military regulations and constitutional provisions. He also noted that the welfare of the families of the accused officers was being considered despite the seriousness of the allegations.

The Defence Minister reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and maintaining constitutional order.

The development has drawn national attention, with security analysts describing the government’s swift response as a signal of zero tolerance for threats to democratic stability.
