Kwankwaso Sets Conditions for Possible Defection to APC

By Erewunmi Peace

Former Kano State Governor and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has stated that any possible move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be subject to strict conditions.

Kwankwaso, who was the NNPP presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, said he is open to political discussions but will not defect without clear agreements that protect the interests of his political movement and supporters.

According to him, any negotiation with the APC must include firm assurances regarding his role in the party and the political future of his loyalists, particularly in Kano State. He emphasized that joining a political party “blindly” without concrete guarantees would be unacceptable.

Kwankwaso also raised concerns about the stability of political structures aligned with him, noting that previous defections in Nigerian politics have often resulted in marginalization of defectors and their supporters.

His comments come amid increasing speculation about realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major parties reportedly seeking influential political figures to strengthen their chances.
While Kwankwaso did not confirm any immediate plan to leave the NNPP, his statement suggests that negotiations remain a possibility if his conditions are met.

Political observers say the development could significantly reshape political dynamics in Kano State and at the national level if a defection eventually occurs.
