Defence Minister Explains Why US Military Airstrikes Hit Sokoto

By Erewunmi Peace

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), has provided clarity on the recent U.S. military airstrikes in Sokoto State, explaining why the operation targeted what he described as a significant armed group.

Speaking in media interviews, Gen. Musa said the strikes were aimed at ISIS‑linked militants, stressing that the group involved was “not a small group” and posed a growing threat to regional security.

He further addressed public concerns about the lack of physical remains following the airstrikes.

According to Musa, the type of weaponry used was highly destructive, which explains why no bodies were recovered at the strike site.

The Defence Minister emphasized that the operation was carried out in coordination with Nigerian authorities and based on actionable intelligence.

He reassured Nigerians that the government remains committed to combating terrorism and protecting communities in the northwest region.

The strikes have sparked mixed reactions, with civil society groups raising questions about national sovereignty, while analysts note the importance of coordinated efforts against extremist groups.

Gen. Musa concluded by urging citizens to remain patient and vigilant, highlighting that security operations require careful planning and international cooperation to effectively neutralize terrorist threats.
