Fela Kuti Honoured with Historic Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award
By Erewunmi Peace
Legendary Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo‑Kuti will be posthumously honoured with a Lifetime
Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards, making him the first African artist to receive this prestigious recognition since its inception in 1963.
Recognising a Global Icon
The Recording Academy cited Fela Kuti’s monumental contributions to music and culture, particularly his creation of Afrobeat, a genre that blends jazz, funk, highlife, and traditional Nigerian rhythms. Fela’s music, activism, and outspoken critique of government oppression have left an enduring mark on artists worldwide.
The Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates artists who have significantly impacted the music industry and inspired generations — a fitting recognition for a musician whose work continues to resonate decades after his passing in 1997.
Family Reacts
Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, expressed excitement over the honour, noting that it reflects his father’s global legacy and influence. “This is not just for our family, but for every African artist who dares to innovate and speak truth to power,” he said.
Other Honourees
This year’s Lifetime Achievement Awards will also be presented to iconic artists including Carlos Santana, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, and Paul Simon, among others.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place during the 67th Annual Grammy Awards later this year.
