Sanwo-Olu Accuses NGOs of Profiting From Makoko Demolition
By Erewunmi Peace
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has
accused certain non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of exploiting the ongoing Makoko demolition for financial gain. Speaking during a press briefing, the governor said some NGOs have obtained international funding under the pretense of aiding displaced residents but have failed to deliver tangible support.
The governor described the actions of these NGOs as “shouting more than the bereaved,” emphasizing that the state government is closely monitoring their activities to ensure resources reach those who need them most.
Makoko, one of Lagos’ most densely populated waterfront communities, has been undergoing demolitions as part of the state’s urban renewal and safety enforcement program.
The demolitions have drawn criticism from human rights groups and activists, who argue that residents are being displaced without adequate resettlement plans.
Prominent figures, including former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili, have publicly criticized the demolitions, citing humanitarian concerns and potential abuse of power.
In response, Governor Sanwo-Olu defended the state’s approach, insisting that the demolitions are necessary to remove unsafe structures, particularly those near high-tension power lines and major infrastructure.
“The government is committed to balancing urban development with the welfare of residents. While we welcome support from NGOs, it must be constructive and transparent,” Sanwo-Olu added.
Makoko, often referred to as the “Venice of Lagos,” has been the focus of redevelopment projects for years. Previous interventions have faced resistance from residents and activists, highlighting the tension between urban planning and the rights of low-income communities.
As Lagos continues its urban renewal initiatives, the debate between the government, NGOs, and advocacy groups is expected to intensify.
Authorities have promised closer supervision of aid organizations to prevent misuse of funds and ensure that displaced residents receive the support they need.
