The Nigerian Army has confirmed that troops were targeted in an armed drone attack carried out by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in Borno State.
According to an official statement released by the Army, the incident occurred on January 29, 2026, in the Sabon Gari area of the state.
The attackers reportedly used weaponized drones alongside other assault tactics during the operation.
Military authorities disclosed that some soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) lost their lives during the confrontation.
The Army noted that while defensive positions were briefly compromised, troops successfully regrouped and regained control of the affected location.
The use of armed drones marks a significant development in the tactics employed by insurgent groups operating in Nigeria’s North-East.
Security analysts say the adoption of drone technology could increase the complexity of counter-insurgency operations in the region.
The Nigerian military reaffirmed its commitment to combating terrorism and restoring peace to Borno State and surrounding areas. Authorities have also assured residents that security operations are ongoing to prevent further attacks.
Borno State has remained one of the regions most affected by insurgency activities over the past decade, with both Boko Haram and ISWAP factions operating within the area.
Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
