Nigerian elder statesman Chief Ralph Obioha has stated in a recent interview that, in his view, some Igbo people still feel an emotional connection to the idea of Biafra, stemming from historical grievances during the 1967–1970 Nigerian Civil War.

Obioha, a former chieftain of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), suggested that this sentiment is rooted in memories of war losses and perceived socio-political marginalization.

He described the feeling as a core emotional attachment among certain communities, rather than a political movement.

However, analysts and experts caution that these remarks reflect one individual’s perspective and should not be interpreted as representing the views of all Igbo people or any official Igbo organization.
Some socio-cultural groups have publicly expressed differing positions.

The Njiko Igbo Forum, for example, recently distanced itself from sit-at-home orders and other actions by pro-Biafra activists, highlighting the diversity of opinion within the region.

Similarly, mainstream Igbo bodies like Ohanaeze Ndigbo have engaged in dialogue with the Federal Government, emphasizing peaceful resolution, national unity, and equitable participation rather than secession.

Observers note that while historical memory and identity continue to influence perspectives in southeastern Nigeria, support for outright independence varies widely.

Specific movements such as the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) advocate for a referendum on independence, but this does not reflect unanimous sentiment among all Igbo communities.

This discussion underscores the complexity of Igbo identity and historical grievances, emphasizing the need for balanced reporting on sensitive socio-political topics in Nigeria.
