Macron Says Europe Prefers Respect Over ‘Bullies’ Amid Tensions With Trump

French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that Europe prefers mutual respect over intimidation, amid renewed diplomatic tensions with former United States President Donald Trump, particularly over issues related to Greenland and trade policies.
Macron made the remarks while speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, where he emphasized that Europe would not submit to pressure or the “law of the strongest” in international relations. Although he did not mention Trump by name, his comments were widely interpreted as a response to Trump’s recent statements and actions concerning Greenland and broader transatlantic relations.
“Europe believes in cooperation based on respect, dialogue, and international law,” Macron said, adding that the continent would continue to defend its sovereignty and collective interests against any form of coercion.
The comments come amid renewed debate following Trump’s repeated interest in Greenland — an autonomous territory of Denmark — and his hardline approach toward European allies during his presidency, including threats of tariffs and diplomatic pressure.
Political analysts say Macron’s remarks reflect growing European efforts to assert strategic autonomy, especially in matters of security, trade, and foreign policy. They also highlight lingering tensions between Europe and Trump’s political ideology, which often prioritizes unilateral action over multilateral cooperation.
European leaders have increasingly called for a more independent and united Europe, capable of standing firm in global affairs while maintaining strong but respectful relationships with allies, including the United States.
Macron concluded by reaffirming Europe’s commitment to diplomacy, dialogue, and international cooperation, stressing that strength should be exercised with responsibility rather than dominance.
