Sit-at-Home Crumbles: Onitsha Main Market Traders Reopen Shops

By Erewunmi Peace

Traders at Onitsha Main Market have resumed business today, effectively ending the week-long sit-at-home closure that had disrupted commercial activities in the city.

The reopening comes after the Anambra State Government, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, directed market operators to resume normal operations following the expiration of the temporary closure. Security personnel were deployed to ensure a smooth resumption of business.

The sit-at-home order, associated with a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), had kept many traders and residents indoors. Despite previous compliance, traders began reopening shops early Monday morning, signaling a return to normal economic activity in one of Nigeria’s busiest commercial hubs.

Market officials and state authorities continue to urge traders and shoppers to adhere to safety guidelines while conducting business, ensuring both security and economic stability in the region.
