NAF Begins Withdrawal of Firearms from Retiring Veterans

By Erewunmi Peace

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commenced the withdrawal of service-issued firearms from retiring personnel as part of efforts to strengthen weapons accountability and enhance public safety.
The development was announced during a meeting between the Chief of the Air Staff and veterans in Abuja.

According to the Air Force leadership, the initiative is an administrative and lawful process aimed at ensuring that all government-issued weapons are properly accounted for upon retirement.

NAF authorities emphasized that the exercise is not punitive but designed to prevent misuse, diversion, or improper storage of firearms after personnel leave active service. They reiterated that service weapons remain government property and must be returned in line with existing regulations and national firearms laws.

Possible Regulated Retention
The Air Force also indicated that it is exploring structured and lawful arrangements that may allow eligible retirees to retain approved firearms under strict regulatory guidelines. However, such measures would be subject to compliance with national security laws and formal approval processes.

Focus on Veteran Welfare
In addition to the firearms retrieval process, NAF
leadership highlighted ongoing efforts to improve veteran welfare, including the establishment of support systems to assist retired personnel with documentation, healthcare access, and general well-being.

The move is seen as part of broader institutional reforms aimed at modernizing military administration and reinforcing accountability within the armed forces.

Further details are expected as the implementation progresses.
