Politics Without Bitterness Will Strengthen Nigeria’s Democracy – Oyebanji

By Erewunmi Peace

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has called for politics without bitterness, stating that a more inclusive and less divisive political culture is essential to strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

The governor made this remark while chairing the Faculty of Arts Distinguished Alumni Lecture held at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

Speaking at the event, Oyebanji emphasized that the “winner-takes-all” approach to politics should be discouraged, noting that democracy thrives when political actors prioritize unity, dialogue, and collective progress over hostility and division.

According to him, political competition should not translate into personal enmity, adding that leaders must focus on policies and governance rather than deepening societal divisions.

The lecture, titled “How to Make a Democrat,” was delivered by Sam Omatseye, Chairman of the Editorial Board of The Nation newspaper.

In his presentation, Omatseye examined the concept of democracy, highlighting the principles that define democratic governance and the responsibilities of citizens and leaders in sustaining it.

He reportedly discussed the distinction between democracy as a system of government and the practical behaviors that make individuals true democrats.

The event attracted academics, political leaders, alumni, and students, and served as a platform for intellectual engagement on the future of democracy in Nigeria.

Governor Oyebanji reaffirmed his belief that fostering tolerance, fairness, and respect in political engagement will ultimately strengthen democratic institutions across the country.
