NAPTIP Rescues 68 Victims, Arrests 62 Human Trafficking Suspects in Akwa Ibom

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued 68 human trafficking victims and apprehended 62 suspected traffickers in Akwa Ibom State as part of intensified efforts to curb the crime in the region.
According to the Uyo Zonal Commander, Mr. Ubong Ekwere, the victims include 51 females and 17 males. While most have been reunited with their families, five victims remain in the agency’s shelter, including two males, one female, and two infants.
Ekwere revealed that the command received 58 human trafficking cases during the period, with some referred by other security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Immigration Service. Several suspects are currently facing prosecution in court, with two convictions already secured.
The NAPTIP official described human trafficking as a persistent problem in Akwa Ibom and urged parents, guardians, community leaders, and local authorities to support the agency’s efforts. He also emphasized the importance of public sensitization campaigns in schools, churches, and rural communities to raise awareness about the dangers of human trafficking.
