Ondo Government Explains Why Two‑Storey Building Collapsed in Akure

By Erewunmi Peace

The Ondo State Government has provided an official explanation for the recent collapse of a two‑storey building under construction along Oyemekun Road in Akure.

According to the state authorities, the collapse was primarily caused by substandard construction materials and violations of building regulations, which made the structure unable to support ongoing construction activities.

Engineers and investigators who assessed the site concluded that these irregularities led to the structural failure.

Several construction workers were injured during the incident and were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention. No fatalities have been officially confirmed.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Sunday Olajide, announced that the building site has been sealed off pending a thorough investigation. He also warned developers and contractors to strictly adhere to approved building codes and safety standards to prevent future accidents.

Olajide said, “We are sealing the site and will determine the immediate and remote causes of this collapse. All developers must follow due process, use quality materials, and obtain the necessary approvals before construction.”

The state government urged residents and developers to cooperate with authorities and stressed that strict enforcement of building regulations remains a priority to ensure safety across Ondo State.
