Court Bars NLC, TUC, JUAC From Tuesday’s Planned Protest in Abuja

By: Erewunmi Peace

The National Industrial Court in Abuja has issued an interim order restraining the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) from going ahead with their planned protest scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Justice Emmanuel Sibilim granted the order on Monday, following an ex parte application filed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the FCT Administration. The application argued that the planned rally could disrupt public order, obstruct vehicular movement, and violate the rights of residents and visitors if it proceeded.

Under the court’s ruling, the NLC, TUC, JUAC and their agents are restrained from embarking on any form of industrial action, demonstration, or protest pending the hearing and determination of the substantive motion on notice. The judge also directed relevant security agencies to ensure no breakdown of law and order within the FCT.

The planned rally was to be a solidarity protest by the NLC and TUC in support of striking workers under JUAC, particularly those in the Federal Capital Development Authority and Federal Capital Territory Administration. The unions had announced the peaceful rally as a show of collective resistance against perceived labour grievances.

The court has adjourned the substantive matter to February 10, 2026, for further hearing.
