Presidency Clarifies Wike’s Political Status, Affirms Fubara as APC Leader in River State

By Erewunmi Peace

The Presidency has clarified the political standing of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stating that he is not a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and therefore does not hold leadership authority in Rivers State.

Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, made the clarification during a television appearance, emphasising that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is the recognised leader of the APC in Rivers State. He explained that Wike, as a PDP member, cannot direct or speak on behalf of the APC.

The statement comes amid public disagreements between Wike and APC officials, including comments he made about party affairs in Rivers State. Following these remarks, some APC members staged protests urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove Wike as FCT minister, accusing him of interfering in party matters despite his non-membership.

The Presidency’s clarification underscores that only recognised APC members — such as Governor Fubara — have formal authority over party leadership and direction in the state. Analysts say the move highlights ongoing tensions between Wike’s federal role and his alignment with opposition politics, reflecting the complex dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
