Former senator, Mudashiru Husain, has criticised comments credited to former Osun State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Rauf Aregbesola, regarding the outcome of the 2023 general election.

Husain’s reaction followed Aregbesola’s recent remarks suggesting that political structures, incumbency, and defections do not necessarily determine election results, citing developments from the 2023 polls as an example.

Responding to the comments, Husain argued that while democracy is anchored on the will of the people, effective leadership remains crucial in shaping and protecting that will.
“Democracy thrives on the will of the people, but that will is shaped, mobilised, and protected by credible political leadership,” Husain stated.

He maintained that political organisation, leadership credibility, and grassroots mobilisation play significant roles in electoral outcomes, warning against oversimplifying the dynamics that influence voters’ decisions.

The exchange has added to ongoing political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with analysts noting increasing debates among political leaders on the relevance of party structure, leadership, and public trust in determining electoral success.

Neither Aregbesola nor the ADC has officially responded to Husain’s remarks as of the time of filing this report.
