The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole (JCA) as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. The confirmation took place following the presentation of a report from the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters.
The committee, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central), concluded that Justice Oyewole is thoroughly qualified for the apex court. During the confirmation session, Senator Adegbonmire stated, “The Senate receives and considers the report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters on the confirmation of Justice Oyewole.”
President Bola Tinubu had previously submitted a nomination request to the Senate, referencing Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the legal basis for the appointment. In his letter, the President expressed his confidence in Justice Oyewole’s capabilities and urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process.
Following a thorough review of Justice Oyewole’s credentials, judicial record, and his performance during the screening, the committee recommended the confirmation, which the Senate unanimously adopted.
Justice Oyewole’s confirmation is expected to enhance the judicial landscape in Nigeria and contribute to the effective dispensation of justice at the highest level.
