Anambra Government Shuts Down Notorious Baby Factory, Rescues Teen Mothers and Infants

By Erewunmi Peace

The Anambra State Government has shut down an illegal baby factory disguised as a medical facility, rescuing several pregnant teenagers and infants in a coordinated raid led by the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade and other enforcement agencies.

The illegal center, operating under the name “Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity”, was located at No. 1 School Road, near Tansian University, Umunya in Oyi Local Government Area. It had previously been closed in February 2024 after the rescue of six pregnant teenagers, but was discovered to be back in operation.

Victims Rescued

During the latest raid, officials rescued:

Five pregnant teenagers (ages ranging from 15 to 21)

Several infants

Other young women being held under suspicious conditions

The victims are currently receiving medical care, counseling, and social welfare support from the state government.

Fake Medical Facility Run by Suspected Human Trafficker

The center was operated by a self-acclaimed doctor identified as Odili Ossai, a native of Delta State. Authorities revealed that he had forged health licenses and lacked any legal authorization to operate a health facility.

“We found out this so-called hospital was never registered with the Anambra State Ministry of Health,” said Dr. Afam Obidike, the State Commissioner for Health. “This is not just a case of medical quackery — it’s child trafficking, exploitation, and a violation of human dignity.”

Illegal Adoption & Exploitation

Investigations indicate that the facility functioned as a baby factory where teenage girls were held against their will, impregnated, and forced to give up their babies, often for illegal adoption or trafficking purposes. The young mothers were also reportedly denied proper medical attention and basic care.

Ongoing Investigation

The Anambra State Police Command and OCHA Brigade are continuing investigations to track down all suspects involved in the syndicate.

Several accomplices have been arrested, and charges related to human trafficking, unlawful detention, and medical fraud are expected to follow.

Government’s Warning

The State Government reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against illegal medical practices and child trafficking. It also issued a public notice encouraging residents to report any suspicious facilities or activities.

“We will continue to track, investigate, and shut down all unauthorized facilities operating under false pretenses,” said Celestine Anere, Head of OCHA Brigade.
