” Be Patient With Tinubu”, Retired Gen. IBM Haruna Tells Nigerians

By Erewunmi Peace

Retired Major General IBM Haruna, former Federal Commissioner for Information and Culture, has urged Nigerians to exercise patience with President Bola Tinubu’s administration as it continues to implement key economic and political reforms.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Haruna said while some of the government’s policies may be tough, they are driven by long-term goals aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s economy and governance structures.

“The administration has its objectives and intentions for reforms, but certain global and local factors have contributed to the present economic realities,” he said.

The retired general acknowledged the removal of the fuel subsidy as one of the most significant shifts in the current administration’s approach to economic reform. He noted that both the government and citizens are still adjusting to new conditions.

Haruna also touched on global changes, referencing the shifting influence of global powers like the U.S., China, and Russia, and how new alliances such as BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, and the UAE) are redefining international dynamics.

On 2027 and Political Coalitions

When asked about the chances of political groups like the African Democratic Congress (ADC) unseating President Tinubu in 2027, Haruna said:

“I don’t know them personally. I read what is reported of them. I am not in their cohort or in politics. What’s more important is credible elections and trustworthy leadership.”

According to him, Nigerians should be more focused on demanding an electoral process that is transparent, democratic, and reflective of the people’s will.

Role of the Arewa Consultative Forum

Speaking about his former role as Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Haruna reaffirmed that the organisation remains committed to northern unity and national progress, without political affiliation.

“ACF is non-partisan. It’s a platform to ensure the North maintains its relevance and contributes meaningfully to building Nigeria,” he added.

He concluded by acknowledging efforts by northern political leaders to improve regional security and ensure inclusive participation in national development.
