EFCC Arrests Nine Suspected Illegal Miners in Niger State

By Erewunmi Peace

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested nine individuals, including five Chinese nationals, for alleged illegal mining activities in Kaniyan village, Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.

The suspects were apprehended by operatives of the EFCC’s Kaduna Zonal Command during a coordinated raid on the mining site. According to official sources, the illegal operations were being carried out without the necessary licenses and in violation of Nigeria’s mining and environmental regulations.

Suspects in Custody:

Chinese nationals: Wu Ping, Xu XianLiang, Xu Aimin, Xeu Cihuo, and Liu Changhua

Nigerians: Ibrahim Abdullahi, Sunday Oladele, Destiny John, and Bulus Samuel

The EFCC revealed that a large cache of mining equipment and materials was seized at the scene. Items recovered include multiple industrial generators, excavating machines, gold melting devices, dumper trucks, chemicals, and even explosives.

“These arrests underscore the Commission’s resolve to protect Nigeria’s economic resources from exploitation by both foreign and local actors,” a spokesperson for the EFCC stated.

The raid follows a series of complaints from local communities and environmental stakeholders about the degradation of farmland, deforestation, and water pollution linked to illegal mining operations in the area.

The suspects are currently in EFCC custody and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

Background:

Nigeria has faced a surge in illegal mining in recent years, especially in gold-rich states like Niger, Zamfara, and Osun. Authorities believe the proceeds from these activities often fund criminal operations, deprive the government of revenue, and contribute to insecurity.

The EFCC has intensified its clampdown on illegal mining as part of a broader national effort to sanitize the extractive sector and ensure only licensed operators engage in mineral exploration and export.
