The Osun State Fire Service has revealed that properties valued at ₦3.9 billion were destroyed in various fire incidents across the state within the first six months of 2025. This alarming figure was confirmed in a report released by the agency over the weekend.
According to the statement, the fire service responded to 55 fire outbreaks between January and June, with one fatality recorded during the period. The report also highlighted that firemen were able to salvage properties worth over ₦130 billion, thanks to timely interventions and emergency responses.
Human Negligence Behind Most Incidents
Speaking on the causes of the fires, the Fire Service attributed most incidents to human errors and negligence, including improper use of electrical appliances, unattended cooking, careless waste burning, and the misuse of inflammable materials.
“We urge the public to prioritize fire safety and be cautious, especially during dry and windy seasons,” a fire department spokesperson said.
Government Response and Equipment Upgrade
In response to the growing number of incidents, the Osun State Government has stepped up efforts to improve emergency response systems. The fire department has received new fire trucks, a high-capacity water tanker, and other firefighting equipment to support operations across the state.
Public enlightenment campaigns are also being launched to educate residents about fire prevention and emergency procedures.
The Importance of Community Vigilance
Fire officials are urging residents to report early signs of fire, conduct regular safety checks in homes and markets, and avoid unsafe practices that could spark uncontrollable blazes.
