From “Puff-Puff” to Prosperity: The Inspiring Journey of Michael Afolaranmi, CEO of 12 Baskets

At age 50, Michael Owolabi Afolaranmi celebrates more than just another decade—he marks a transformational journey from humble beginnings as a street vendor to founding 12 Baskets, a thriving culinary empire in Nigeria and beyond.
Born in Lagos, Afolaranmi’s entrepreneurial spirit began with frying and selling puff-puff and samosa in Ikeja. Twenty-three years later, he operates branches in Lekki, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Abuja, and Lagos International Airport—with an international branch poised to open in Houston by late 2025.
Rooted in faith and generosity, the “12 Baskets” concept draws inspiration from the biblical narrative of abundance—five loaves feeding thousands led to twelve baskets of leftovers, symbolizing divine multiplication. The brand has since expanded into real estate, logistics, travel, fashion, and youth development.
Afolaranmi is equally committed to social impact. Ordained by Pastor E. A. Adeboye, he leads the Michael Afolaranmi Foundation, which offers free entrepreneurship training and support for youths—translating personal success into community upliftment.
“From frying pan to boardroom wasn’t just about business—it was about purpose, persistence, and paying forward,” Afolaranmi told guests at his milestone birthday celebration in Lagos earlier this week.
