Kaduna Train Attack: DSS Witness Tells Court Tukur Mamu Received ₦50m From Terror Group Leader

By Erewunmi Peace

A Department of State Services (DSS) operative on Tuesday told a Federal High Court in Abuja that Tukur Mamu, the alleged terrorist negotiator linked to the 2022 Abuja–Kaduna train attack, allegedly received ₦50 million from the leader of the terror group behind the abduction of passengers.

The testimony came during the continuation of Mamu’s trial, where the prosecution presented its sixth witness. According to the operative, the money was part of the ransom funds paid by families of kidnapped train passengers.

The witness, identified as a forensic investigator with the DSS, told the court that audio files extracted from Mamu’s mobile device revealed conversations between him and the terror group’s commander, popularly known as “Shugaba.” In one of the recordings played in court, the terror leader reportedly told Mamu to “take ₦50 million for himself” from the ransom proceeds.

The DSS also alleged that the recordings suggested Mamu maintained regular communication with members of the group during the height of the 2022 hostage crisis.

Tukur Mamu, a publisher and former negotiator, was arrested in 2022 and is standing trial on charges of terrorism financing, aiding terrorist activities, and unlawful possession of classified materials. He has consistently denied all allegations.

As of press time, neither Mamu’s legal team nor family members have issued a fresh statement regarding the latest testimony. The case was adjourned to a later date for continuation of trial.

Mamu remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by the court.
