In a landmark moment for grassroots communication, the Lagos State Government has launched Ishokan 106.7 FM, Nigeria’s first radio station fully owned and operated by a Local Government Authority (LGA).

The new station, established by the Mushin Local Government Area, was officially unveiled at its headquarters on Oliyide Street in Mushin, with the event graced by top government officials, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, praised the Mushin LGA for taking a bold and innovative step toward deepening local governance through media.

“This initiative marks a turning point in the way local governments connect with their people. It sets the pace for other councils across the country to follow,” Dr. Hamzat said.

Why It Matters

First of its kind: This is the first LG-owned radio station in Nigeria, a move aimed at enhancing grassroots communication, civic education, and public awareness.

Community-centered programming: Ishokan FM is expected to run multilingual programs, covering topics such as local news, public health, youth development, cultural heritage, and live feedback sessions with council leaders.

Innovation at the grassroots: The radio station is seen as a tool to promote transparency, foster community engagement, and combat misinformation at the local level.

Chairman of Mushin LGA, Emmanuel Bamigboye, expressed his appreciation to the Lagos State Government for its support and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to using the station as a bridge between the government and the people.

“This station belongs to the people. It will reflect their voices, needs, and hopes,” Bamigboye stated.

Traditional leaders, market women, students, and youth groups in Mushin applauded the launch, describing it as a sign that the local government truly cares about inclusive development.
