National Grid Collapses for Second Time in January 2026

By Erewunmi Peace

Nigeria’s national electricity grid has collapsed again, marking the second system failure in January 2026 and plunging several parts of the country into darkness.

The latest collapse occurred on Tuesday, just days after a similar incident was recorded earlier in the month, raising fresh concerns over the stability of the country’s power infrastructure.

Data from the power sector showed that electricity generation and load allocation to distribution companies dropped to zero megawatts at the time of the incident, confirming a total grid shutdown.

Electricity distribution companies across the country, including Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), confirmed the development in public notices to customers, attributing the outage to a national grid disturbance.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) later explained that the collapse was triggered by a voltage disturbance that spread across the transmission network, causing several transmission lines and substations to trip.

The repeated grid failures have continued to draw criticism from Nigerians, who are grappling with persistent power outages despite ongoing reforms in the electricity sector.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts were ongoing to restore power supply nationwide.
