Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Olakulehin, Dies Aged 90

His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, has passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, at the age of 90 .

The royal family and Olubadan-in-Council confirmed his death, noting that it follows closely after his 90th birthday on July 5 and the first anniversary of his coronation on July 12, 2024 .

Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin had a distinguished career—rising from military service to entrepreneurship, eventually becoming Olubadan in line with Ibadan’s traditional rotational system .

He was presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and began his reign as monarch symbolizing unity and cultural stewardship .

Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has expressed condolences, praising Oba Olakulehin as a wise, visionary leader whose contributions will not be forgotten .

The Olubadan-in-Council is expected to initiate the traditional succession process immediately, which follows a structured rotation between the Baale (civic) and Balogun (military) lines .

The crown council will gather for formal rites and commencement of succession proceedings.

Tributes and mourning directives are anticipated from community leaders, state officials, and traditional institutions across Ibadanland.
