Opral Benson Found Safe in Liberia Amid Conflicting Reports About Her Whereabouts

By Erewunmi Peace

Nigerian socialite and cultural icon Chief Opral Benson, popularly known as the Iya Oge of Lagos, has been confirmed to be safe in Monrovia, Liberia, following days of concern over her whereabouts.

The 90-year-old Benson was declared missing by her family after she failed to return home on January 13, 2026. Family sources confirmed that she is in good health and receiving care.

However, there are conflicting accounts about how she arrived in Liberia. In one statement, her daughter suggested that Benson appeared confused about her location.

Other sources, including the African Refugees Foundation (AREF) — where she serves as president — clarified that her stay in Liberia is voluntary and known to her family, dismissing earlier claims that she was missing as misleading.

Benson, who holds the traditional title of Iya Oge of Lagos, is a renowned entrepreneur, socialite, and cultural figure, with decades of contributions in fashion, education, and public service.

The family has requested privacy and prayers as they ensure her safe return to Nigeria. Meanwhile, authorities and supporters have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information about her situation.
