Senator Dickson Warns of Failing State, Accuses Political Class of Destroying Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria — Senator Henry Seriake Dickson has issued a stark warning that Nigeria is on the brink of becoming a failing state, blaming the political class for the country’s worsening democratic decline. Speaking at a democracy workshop in Abuja on Monday, July 15, the senator expressed grave concern over the deliberate destruction of key institutions and the erosion of democratic values.
Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West in the Nigerian Senate and is a former governor of Bayelsa State, accused political leaders of turning the democratic space into a “playground for personal ambition,” instead of serving the people.
“We are witnessing political class suicide. The way political leaders are using state institutions to silence opposition, influence elections, and manipulate the courts is dangerous and unsustainable,” he said.
The event, themed “Safeguarding Nigeria’s Democracy Through Unity and Resolve,” was organized by the Nigerian Civil Society’s Alliance for Democratic Change. Civil society leaders, academics, and students were in attendance.
According to Senator Dickson, INEC, the judiciary, the police, and the military are increasingly being influenced for political purposes, leaving citizens feeling powerless and disillusioned.
“Democracy dies when institutions no longer serve the people. What we have now is a ticking time bomb,” he added.
He called for urgent reforms and unity among Nigerians to resist the ongoing erosion of the country’s democratic foundations.
