Soludo Shuts Down Onitsha Main Market Over Monday Sit-at-Home

By Erewunmi Peace

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State has ordered the temporary closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week after traders ignored government directives and continued observing the Monday sit-at-home order.

The shutdown was announced during an unscheduled inspection of the market, where many shops remained closed despite repeated appeals from the state government for normal business operations.

Governor Soludo warned that if traders do not resume business by next Monday, the closure could be extended to one month as part of stronger enforcement measures.

The government described the action as necessary to restore normal commercial activity in Onitsha, which is a major trading hub in the South-East region.

Authorities say the Monday sit-at-home observance has disrupted economic activities and negatively impacted businesses in the area.

This measure underscores the state government’s determination to ensure compliance with laws and regulations governing trade and commerce in Anambra State.
