Night Robbery Scourge Persists Around Mile 12 as Residents Raise Alarm
By Erewunmi Peace
Mile 12, one of Lagos’ busiest markets, is once again in the spotlight as residents and commuters raise concerns over a surge in nighttime robberies and attacks along the Ketu–Mile 12 corridor.
According to reports from traders and transport workers, the area becomes a hotspot for phone snatchers and armed gangs once night falls, with incidents often occurring under the Mile 12 Bridge and nearby bus stops. Victims are typically commuters heading home late or those returning from the popular Mile 12 market.
“If you pass here after 8 p.m., you must be very careful. These boys will just appear from nowhere and collect your phone, money, everything,” a commuter told reporters.
Police Response
The Lagos State Police Command has acknowledged the complaints and assured residents that security patrols will be intensified to curb the menace. The Rapid Response Squad recently arrested two suspects linked to traffic robbery in the area after they allegedly dispossessed a passerby of ₦25,000.
“We are committed to flushing out these criminals. Patrol teams have been deployed to Mile 12 and surrounding areas to ensure safety,” a police spokesperson stated.
Traders Speak Out
Market traders have also expressed worry about the insecurity, saying it discourages customers from shopping late in the evening. They are calling on the government to install better street lighting and increase surveillance.
Safety Tips for Commuters
Security experts advise commuters to:
Avoid walking alone at night near the Mile 12 axis.
Keep valuables out of sight when in traffic.
Report suspicious movements to nearby security operatives.
With the festive season approaching, stakeholders warn that the trend may worsen unless decisive action is taken.
