Nurse Alleges Assault After Reporting Reuse of Syringes at Kwara Health Centre

By Erewunmi Peace

A nurse at the Ekan Primary Health Centre in Oke-Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State, Rufus Favour Mojisola, has accused local health officials of assault and intimidation after she reportedly raised concerns about the alleged reuse of syringes and other unhygienic medical practices at the facility.

According to multiple media reports, including the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Mojisola claimed she was physically assaulted and queried by senior officials after drawing attention to what she described as unsafe injection practices. She also alleged that she was forced to kneel, insulted, and later attacked by unidentified men following her complaints.

“I only wanted to ensure patients’ safety and stop the reuse of syringes. Instead, I was beaten and threatened,” she told reporters.

The nurse said she had submitted formal petitions to the Kwara State Ministry of Health and other authorities, appealing for protection and an independent investigation.

However, the Kwara State Association of Community Health Practitioners and local health officials have denied the allegations, describing them as “false and exaggerated.”
In a statement published by the Nigerian Tribune, the association said its internal checks found no evidence of syringe reuse or harassment, adding that all standard medical safety protocols were being followed at the centre.

“We refute claims of intimidation and poor sanitary practices. The facility is operating within professional health standards,” the association stated.
