Osun College of Health Technology Moves Toward Polytechnic Status

By Erewunmi Peace

The Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa, is set for a major institutional upgrade as the state government and the college’s governing council have begun formal steps to transform the institution into a full-fledged polytechnic.

According to multiple credible reports, Governor Ademola Adeleke has forwarded a bill to the Osun State House of Assembly seeking legislative approval for the upgrade. The proposed law aims to change the institution’s name to Osun State Polytechnic of Health and Management Sciences, Ilesa, broadening its academic scope and enabling it to access additional federal and state funding.

During a recent council meeting, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Hon. Niyi Idowu, reaffirmed the college’s commitment to pursuing the upgrade, describing it as a necessary move to “enhance academic excellence, research capacity, and professional training in the health and allied sectors.”

If approved, the transition will allow the institution to offer National and Higher National Diploma (ND and HND) programmes under the supervision of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), positioning it alongside other polytechnics across Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the institution’s current name and operations remain unchanged pending the passage and signing of the proposed bill. The college continues to run its existing diploma and certificate programmes, serving hundreds of health technology students across the state.

The development has been widely welcomed by students and education stakeholders, who see the upgrade as a step toward improving healthcare education and expanding opportunities for Osun youths.
