The Senate has confirmed retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, following a rigorous five-hour screening session at the National Assembly on Wednesday.
General Musa, a former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fill the ministerial vacancy after the resignation of the previous Defence Minister. During his screening, lawmakers questioned him on national security challenges, military reforms, counter-terrorism strategies, and the welfare of Nigerian troops.
In his remarks, Musa pledged to strengthen the country’s defence architecture and intensify action against terrorism, banditry, and other security threats.
He told senators that Nigeria’s armed forces needed improved coordination, modern equipment, and enhanced intelligence-sharing to effectively protect citizens.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the confirmation after a unanimous voice vote.
He stated that General Musa’s experience as a former CDS positions him well to lead ongoing defence reforms and restore confidence in Nigeria’s security system.
General Musa previously served as Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai and later as Chief of Defence Staff, where he oversaw joint military operations across the country. His appointment is expected to bring continuity, discipline, and strategic focus to the Defence Ministry.
With his confirmation, General Musa will immediately assume office and is expected to work closely with service chiefs, security agencies, and the Presidency to implement new defence policies aimed at stabilising the nation.
