By Erewunmi Peace

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rewarded the Super Falcons of Nigeria with $100,000 each, national honours, and three-bedroom homes following their outstanding performance at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The honour was announced during a presidential reception at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, where the President congratulated the players and technical crew for bringing pride and global recognition to Nigeria.

Unprecedented National Appreciation

Each of the 24 players was:

Awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) — a prestigious national honour.

Gifted a $100,000 cash reward (to be paid in naira equivalent).

Promised a three-bedroom apartment under the Renewed Hope Housing Programme.

The 11 technical team members were also awarded $50,000 each, in addition to receiving national recognition for their support in the team’s victory.

“The Super Falcons have shown the world the strength, skill, and spirit of Nigerian women,” President Tinubu said.
“Your victory is a source of national pride, and this is our way of saying thank you.”

National and International Reactions

The announcement sparked celebration across Nigeria’s sports community. Fans, analysts, and former football legends applauded the move as a major step toward supporting women’s sports and acknowledging their contribution to national development.

Super Falcons captain Onome Ebi expressed gratitude on behalf of the team, stating:

“We are humbled by this honour. It inspires us to do even more for the country.”

Renewed Support for Nigerian Sports

This gesture comes as part of the President’s broader commitment to boosting Nigeria’s sports infrastructure and morale. It follows increased budget allocations to women’s football and calls for more domestic investment in grassroots female teams.
